Abstract

The development of technology today is so fast in all fields, especially in the field of information and communication. The result of the development of information and communication technology that is increasingly advanced is a smartphone. Smartphone is an innovation in mobile technology that brings many advantages and benefits to its users with various features that certainly make it easier for users to access the website. The rapid use of smartphones has also led to an increasing number of eye complaints and people wearing glasses. These complaints are caused by radiation emitted by the smartphone screen, which can cause eye strain in people after looking at the cellphone screen for more than 2 hours. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between distance and duration of playing smartphones with complaints of tired eyes in students of the Faculty of Public Health, Islamic University of North Sumatra in 2021. This study uses an observational analytic method with a transsectional approach. The data collection procedure used a simple random sampling procedure with a total of 81 people / respondents. The results of the study of distance and eye strain showed no relationship at p = 0.087. And there is also no significant relationship to duration and eye fatigue at p = 0.070. The conclusion obtained from this study is that there is no significant relationship between the distance and duration of smartphone use with eye fatigue in Public Health students class of 2021, State Islamic University of North Sumatra.
